Furnished Tenancies for Care Leavers: The Holdings Case Study
Young people in care are at a greater risk of a range of challenges, including social exclusion, lower attainment at school, abuse and neglect, and going into custody.
To reduce the risk of young people experiencing these challenges, it is important for them to get support at a really crucial moment in their lives; where they move from the care system and into independent living.
The Holdings, a housing scheme run by Bournville Village Trust, does just this. Young people enter the scheme and move into their own furnished flat, alongside receiving training and support in how to live independently, from budgeting to maintenance and repairs.
This inspiring project has made a real long term impact on the lives of the young people involved. We spoke to Alison Wilkinson, Youth Services Manager at Bournville Village Trust, to discover more about the scheme and the impact it's making.
